I am the LORD, and there is no other;
I form the light and create darkness,
I make peace and create calamity;
I, the LORD, do all these things. – Isaiah 45:6b-7
The other day a terror plot was discovered and averted in England. We all too quickly rejoice and say again, "Truly God loves us!" What if the plot was carried out? We would say, "God is angry with us!" Yes, God is angry with sin, but He loves us. He loves us so much that he foresook His Son. And gave this redemption to us in our Baptism. The other day God used the governments of the world to make peace!
This peace is good, but we should not expect peace as the only sign that God loves us. What if calamity comes? God says, "I, the LORD, do all these things." Yet, is the calamity a sign that God hates us? No, God loves us! Even when calamity comes. Do not be worried about what peace or calamity may come tomorrow. Let tomorrow worry about itself. Rejoice that you are Baptized. God’s grace is therefore great upon you. Rejoice! All things are gift!
Many, O LORD my God, are Your wonderful works
Which You have done;
And Your thoughts toward us
Cannot be recounted to You in order;
If I would declare and speak of them,
They are more than can be numbered. – Psalm 40:5
