Today is the start of Advent – He comes. The Lord comes. That’s what we believe. We said again it today in the Divine Service. He comes as King – not to condemn, not to judge. But he came for us men – that’s fancy talk for all people – and our salvation.
Our world is full of troubles – hurricanes, earthquakes, terrorists. People wonder from where their help is to come. In the church too there are problems – false teachers, heresies, schisms. We look to God in heaven and beg for help.
Our help comes from the Lord! The one by whom all things were made has descended from His heavenly throne. He comes. He who neither slumbers nor sleeps took on flesh, he became man. He was born. He slept. He ate. He wept. He died. He rose again from the dead. He did it all for our salvation.
He came down for us, and he comes to us as he did today – in His SUpper. He gives his own body and blood. There he delivers us from the devil, the world, and our sinful nature, and there he delivers to us forgiveness, life and salvation which will keep us in body and soul unto life everlasting. There at His supper he fulfills his baptismal promise to "keep your going out and your coming in from this time forth and even forevermore." IN the Name of Jesus. Amen.
