Tune: Dunstan

Music: Joseph Barnby, 1838–96

Though death may come and grief increase,
And tears now flow and e’en increase,
We don’t despair; Christ is our peace.
In Christ fore’er we stand!

Though death his gruesome teeth does bear
We hold our ground and have no fear
For Jesus is beside us there.
In Christ fore’er we stand!

Grim death a show of strength may make—
Our confidence he shall not shake.
Our Lord does all death’s weapons break.
In Christ fore’er we stand!

The grave its jaws now opens wide;
At this we won’t be terrified—
Through Jesus’ death this grave has died!
In Christ fore’er we stand!

Of all who live Christ is the first.
Now, through His life, death’s curse is cursed,
Yea, all his fetters now are burst!
In Christ fore’er we stand!

Our loved one lies before us there—
Let this sight make our hearts prepare
For when we, like him/her, death will share.
In Christ fore’er we stand!

For the unbaptized Christian:

Rejoice at what our Lord doth speak,
My Word does ev’ry bondage break,
In him who hears, it faith does make.”
In Christ foe’er we stand!

or

For the baptized Christian:

Rejoice! Our Lord does bless us sore,
And makes our sins to be no more
By Word that He o’er us does pour.
In Christ fore’er we stand!

Our grief may tarry for the day,
Yet we shall ever boldly say,
Christ Jesus is our Life and Stay!”
In Christ fore’er we stand!
