Your gracious call, O Lord, goes forth
To one and all, whate’er his worth:
“Come, work My Vineyard on this day,
And you’ll receive My righteous wage.”

Though some come soon, and some be lax;
Some come just at their hour last;
Some bear the dusk, some heat of day;
Yet You give all th’exact same pay!

Your ways, O Lord, are not our ways—
What’s “due” based not on works but grace!
That’s not a wage we earn at all,
But Your free gift for one and all!

You died for all, that is our worth.
At death Your heart in love poured forth,
Thus all debt’s paid, all work’s now done.
For us, O Christ, You’ve all this won!

There’s naught more precious we could gain,
For all our works are done vain.
What’s freely giv’n, freely received
Is those who have in You believed.

O Lord, how vast and good Your heart
That You such lavish grace impart!
Let not my heart nor eye be ill,
O Lord, unto Your gracious will.
